Assessing atoll island physical robustness: Application to Rangiroa Atoll, French Polynesia

چکیده

This article proposes a comprehensive methodology considering geomorphic, ecological and human variables to assess atoll island physical robustness in the face of climate-ocean pressures. Six are considered, including size, elevation, shape, structure, vegetation influence activities on natural capacity adjust changes. Each these is ranked five-level scale rankings summed up provide final estimate form an index relative each island. applied twelve islands Rangiroa Atoll, French Polynesia, considered key maintenance habitability by local community exhibiting contrasting configurations. The findings emphasize highly levels robustness, with indices ranging from 0.33 0.75. main contributors differences are, order importance, size changes; elevation; structure vegetation. Some peripheral rural that targeted public authorities for future development have much higher than settled islands. Based findings, we advocate, first, inclusion assessments modelling studies; second, within-atoll relocation people assets more robust areas

Airborne hyperspectral detection of microbial mat pigmentation in Rangiroa atoll (French Polynesia)

The pigmentation of a cyanobacterial mat located in Rangiroa atoll (French Polynesia) was characterized using low-altitude (500 m) Compact Airborne Spectrometer Imager hyperspectral measurements. Peaks in second and fourth derivatives of the reflective absorptance can be explained by chlorophyll and carotenoid pigments, which were independently identified by high-pressure liquid chromatography....

Typology of atoll rims in Tuamotu Archipelago (French Polynesia) at landscape scale using SPOT HRV images

The lagoon of an atoll is separated from the ocean by a rim. As the rim controls the ̄ ux of water between ocean and lagoon, its structure is one of the major forcing factors of the biological processes that depend on the renewal rate of lagoonal water. Characterizing rim structure and its degree of hydrodynamic aperture is mandatory for comparing the functioning of diVerent atoll lagoons. This...

Metazooplankton communities in the Ahe atoll lagoon (Tuamotu Archipelago, French Polynesia): spatiotemporal variations and trophic relationships.

Metazooplankton abundance, biomass (<80 μm, 200-500 μm and >500 μm) and community structure in the Ahe atoll were studied together with their relationships with environmental factors (temperature, salinity, wind) and trophic factors (phytoplankton, bacteria, heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) and ciliates) during three periods in 2008-2009. Meroplankton, mainly bivalve and gastropod larvae, wa...

Multi-scale distribution and dynamics of bivalve larvae in a deep atoll lagoon (Ahe, French Polynesia).

Bivalve larvae and hydrographic parameters were sampled over a range of spatio-temporal scales in a deep atoll lagoon. Bivalve larvae abundances were very high throughout the year: 18,550 m(-3) in average. Larvae were (i) concentrated at mid-depth with nocturnal ascent and diurnal descent, (ii) heterogeneously dispersed at the lagoon scale, (iii) subject to day-to-day variation in abundance and...

Thirty-year recovery of mollusc communities after nuclear experimentations on Fangataufa atoll (Tuamotu, French Polynesia).

A 30-year study of temporal changes in gastropod community structure on the reefs of a Pacific Ocean atoll (Fangataufa, Tuamotu Archipelago) subjected to atmospheric nuclear tests during the 1960s offered the opportunity for an otherwise impossible field experiment that could help ecologists understand mollusc primary succession. Reef molluscs were partly or entirely wiped out by the heat of th...
